A Brief History
The Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club as we know it today is an amalgamation of the Hamilton Squash Racquets Club and the Hamilton Tennis Club.
Hamilton Squash Racquets Club began in 1936 as an "all male", one court club in Barton Street. Steady growth saw three courts opened on the present Tristram Street site in 1960. A fourth court was added in 1964, the Gallery Court in 1971 and major alterations and extensions were carried out in 1983 including the addition of the glassback Court. The Club has had the honour of hosting World Events in 1971, 1983 and 1989 as well as many National Championships. We boast Nine National champions, three men and six women, our most famous being Susan Devoy and most recent, Leilani Rorani.
Hamilton Tennis Club began in the early 1900's with one singles court and three doubles courts in the vicinity of the St Peters Tennis Club moving to Hinemoa Park in the 1920's.
The Club boasted some top tennis players of the day, one being A W Sims who was NZ Singles Champion in 1923. The Tennis Club has been on its present Tristram Street site since 1985 and amalgamated with the Squash Club in 1991.
In 1992 both club names were changed to become known as the Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club Inc.
